I recommend natural beauty, baby, and cleaning products that are just as effective as toxic ones.

Why It's Effective

When it comes to a safe mascara that does not run (which is hard to find!), Lily Lolo is the best.

Lily Lolo has two awesome mascaras:

  1. Original (white tube)

  2. Big Lash (black tube)

Original has a thin, straight brush with fine bristles and Big Lash has a thick hourglass-shaped brush.  Use original for definition and length, and Big Lash for added thickness and volume.

The formulas are similar and both are safe, but Big Lash has a longer ingredient list.

Both give you the following:

  • Deep black color

  • No clumps

  • No running or flaking

  • Stays all day

  • No irritation

  • Removes easily (see how to remove makeup here)

Why It's Safe

Many mascaras get their deep black pigment from unsafe ingredients like carbon black or D&C Black #2. Carbon black is color made from the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. It is toxic, possibly carcinogenic, and the FDA has even found carbon black unsafe for cosmetics used around the eyes.

D&C Black #2 is carbon black that has conformed to certain FDA standards, such as limitations on the amount of certain impurities like arsenic, lead, mercury, sulfur and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

However, according to the Environmental Working Group, D&C black #2 has high concerns for organ system toxicity. The Environment Canada Domestic Substance List classifies D&C black #2 as expected to be toxic and a high human health priority.

Lily Lolo gets its color from natural iron oxides rather than carbon black or D&C Black #2.

In addition to being free from harmful black pigments, Lily Lolo contains none of the following toxic ingredients commonly found in mascara:

  • Parabens - artificial preservatives associated with endocrine disruption, cancer, developmental and reproductive toxicity.

  • Triethanolamine - toxic to immune and respiratory systems, skin allergen, and can be contaminated with nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic and banned from Canadian cosmetics.

  • Quaternium 15 – preservative that acts as a formaldehyde releaser, is an allergen and has concerns for organ system toxicity. Formaldehyde is a carcinogen and immune/respiratory/skin toxicant that is restricted in cosmetics in Canada.

  • Imidazolidinyl urea - preservative that works by forming formaldehyde, which is a carcinogen and immune/respiratory/skin toxicant that is restricted in cosmetics in Canada. Exposure may lead to the development of a formaldehyde allergy or an allergy of the releaser itself.

  • Fragrance - mix of fragrance and chemicals associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system. Can contain unnamed toxic ingredients like phthalates which disrupt the endocrine system

  • BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) – preservative with concerns of skin, eye, and lung irritation, and organ system toxicity. Limited evidence of carcinogenicity and endocrine disruption.

  • Propylene glycol - skin irritant associated with contact dermatitis.[1]

Aside from these toxic ingredients, mascaras are often irritating to the eyes.  Lily Lolo mascaras do not cause any irritation, itching, or redness.

Maybelline's Great Lash mascara contains triethanolamine, quaternium 15, propylene glycol, and parabens.

Diorshow contains parabens, triethanolamine, and fragrance.

Lancome Definicils contains parabens, BHT, and imidazolidinyl urea.
